ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES APPLES
This nutritious fruit is known
all over the world and is loved by many. The truth is when I get to meet people who say they do not like apples I find
this really surprising because apples are one of those fruits that just the look
alone makes you love it. It is also packed with a lot of nutrients and fact
that it has so much nutrient is what caused the saying of “an apple a day keeps
you away from the doctor” so if apples are one of your favorite fruits then you
are on the right train but if you are in the “I don’t like apple gang” then
here is a list of things you are missing out on
- Apples are good sources of fiber and vitamin C. A medium-sized Apple has about 100 calories, 25g of carbohydrates, 19g of sugar, 4g of fiber, 14% vitamin C, 6% potassium, no protein, no fat and a variety of antioxidants
- Apple is rich in the antioxidant polyphenol. Antioxidant-rich foods are great for the body as they help to prevent damage in the body which are caused by harmful free radicals
- Apples may help aid weight loss. This due to their high fiber content. Research has shown that fiber-rich food helps aid weight loss by keeping one full for a longer time in a day and this makes one consume fewer calories and hence leading to weight loss
- Apple aid digestion and help gut health. Apples are rich in a fiber called pectin. This fiber serves as a prebiotic which is very good for the gastrointestinal health of the body. Most of the fiber and antioxidants are on the skin. So it is advisable not to peel the skin when eating the apples

- Apples may help with brain health. Research has shown that apples help protect nerve cells. It is also known to help improve memory and can be said to reduce the risk of disorders like Alzheimer disease
DISADVANTAGES OF APPLES
- Apples are high in acid. So in as much as apples are packed with nutrients, when they are consumed excessively they can be harmful.
- Some people are allergic to apples. Such people may have symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting. So it’s best to avoid eating apples or if you really want to eat them you could peel off the skin, as such people may be reacting to the fiber content in apples
- Apple seeds are dangerous. They contain a chemical compound called amygdalin which releases cyanide (a poisonous chemical) when in contact with digestive enzymes in the body. But not to scare you too much it is only harmful when one consumes many of them. One or two seeds cannot be harmful as the body can handle small doses of cyanide. But just to be safe, it is better not to consume them at all
