PINEAPPLES: THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Pineapple is known for its scaly
bumpy outer part which is called eyes and a crown of leaves that are on the
top head of the fruit. This fruit is loved by so many people all around the
world and this is because of how sweet and juicy it is. Personally, I am not a
fan of pineapple but this should not be a reason to deprive my sweet readers
and lovers of pineapple from knowing what wonderful benefits we could get from
this sweet fruit. So let’s get into it, shall we!!
ADVANTAGES
- Pineapples are rich in antioxidants. One thing we need to know is that all fruits and vegetables are rich in various antioxidants. Antioxidants are very important in the body as they prevent damage in the body caused by harmful free radicals. Pineapples are rich in the antioxidant phenolics and flavonoids.
- Pineapples may have anti-cancer properties. Due to the antioxidant properties of pineapples, it can be said to help fight against cancer. Free radical cells cause inflammation and growth of cancerous cells so, eating antioxidant-rich foods helps to prevent the growth of these cancerous cells.
- Pineapples contain a high amount of vitamin C and manganese. The presence of vitamin C in pineapple makes it an immune system booster. The immune system is the body’s defense against germs and viruses. So vitamin C helps to keep the immune system stronger. Manganese helps to build strong bones and improve the overall bone and mineral density of the body.
- Pineapples may aid digestion. Pineapples contain a high amount of the enzyme bromelain. This enzyme helps to break down protein molecules into small peptides which make the protein molecules to be easily absorbed through the small intestine. This is why pineapples can be used as an ingredient in meat tenderizer
- Pineapples may help to cause speedy recovery from an intense workout session or surgery. The presence of the enzyme bromelain is said to reduce inflammation, swelling, bruises, or pain that may occur after surgery or intense exercise.
DISADVANTAGES
- Due to the high amount of vitamin C in pineapples, when consumed in large amount it may cause diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain or heartburn
- Pineapples contain a high amount of natural sugar. Because of this, it may cause an increase in blood sugar levels. This is why pineapples are not advisable for diabetic patients.
- Pineapples may cause tooth decay. Pineapples are highly acidic in nature as they contain high amounts of ascorbic acid which is vitamin C. So when consumed, they may soften the enamel and lead to tooth decay
- Canned pineapples are usually higher in calories and sugar but if you must take canned pineapples, look for the one that is canned in fruit juice instead of syrup. Generally, fruits are best to be taken when fresh so as to get their minerals and vitamins properly
After knowing all this, it
shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your pineapples. Just like any other fruit
when consumed excessively, they can cause numerous side effects on the body. So
enjoy your pineapple whatever way you want whether as a juice, a smoothie,
salad or you want it as an ingredient to a dish. Enjoy this sweet tooth fruit
